OKIDO Workshop-2

The second lesson of OKIDO Workshop yesterday was more fun! I can call it "Swapping practice" :)

First Game:
First part, we were told to draw a character in 3 piece of cards. Head, middle of the body, and legs separate on the cards.

Our cute chracterssss

This is my little mushroom on the left hand side

Second part, swapping!

swap! swap! swap!

swap! swap! swap!

Done! new heads, new bodies and new legs. :D

Looks so cute! everyone's smiling with their new born characters!

And this is my mushroom with new body and legs :D

Second Game:
First game is about character, and second game is about story!
We are told to write a story, but by different people.
When we write down a sentence, we have to pass it to next person to continue the next one until ending.
So finally, we will get a really funny story and ending.

I got this one. :D

I think the main idea of this lesson that Rachel wanted us to do is try to explode any kinds of possibility. when we're stuck sometimes no matter on characters, stories or ideas, why not have fun switching it and playing with it, some cool ideas will probably come up all of a sudden in games! :)

OKIDO Workshop-1

I Feel so lucky that i can join in this illustration project. I really love drawing especially draw for children.
Our tutor Rachel she is such a lovely woman, i can feel she's full of passion for illustration, and she's really kind to help us and gives us suggestion and advice. Again, I'm really lucky in this group.

This is what we did on the first lesson. we were told to use red and blue colour papers to cut and paste on a piece of paper. In this process, we can try and create our characters in the habitat that we gave it. This was really fun that in the process, it was not just thinking about what kind of character you want to create, but at the some time, you will automatically give your character some stories in your brain! you keep cutting and pasting at the same time, you're telling yourself and giving story to your character, that is the most fun part for me in this process. Because when I draw, this is also a "self talking" time  for me.

This is what we did

Looks nice is a row!

Like these shapes of the chracters!

This is lovely! :)

In the middle are my first try of mushroom characters. My habitat is rain forest. Have to improve some more tho. :)

This one is awesome! such an elegant creature!

Love the fluffy cutting line!

Project for next term! Okido: Illustration!

Luckily i've got my first choice of project for next term! The reason I choose this project is because i like illustration, and this company is also focus on children development, i think its quite relevant to what i've learned in university in Taiwan (my major in Taiwan is Applied Psychology) and i love kids as well!

Here are some illustrations of Rachel Ortas who is gonna lead us for the next term project! I think my style of illustration i cant say its similar with hers but i think we have some common which are simple lines and not perfect!
For me, imperfect illustrations can become an unigue art work as well. Like children's draw, the outcome maybe not perfect, but because its imperfect, so they're special, aren't they? :)

Task for today's PPD

This is today's task for PPD course. we were asked to find some graphic design companies on the street and do some interview with graphic designers. At the beginning, i was a bit worried about that wasn't it hard to just pop into the companies and ask them questions. But things went well as i hadnt imagined! People in the first company we found were so friendly, the man who opened the door for us even introduced us to his colleagues, everyone smiled and said hi to us (felt warm).

This company is called UNITY, as i walked into the company, i loved the atmosphere there immediately, no matter of the decoration of the lights or the group discussion among colleagues, it made me feel like working inside.

For me, this is quite a nice and special experience for me to walk inside and take a look of UK's design companies and printing companies, it makes me talk to myself that one day i'm gonna sit inside and become a good graphic designer as well! :)

Klang

Last week in Letterpress class, we were asked to use this typeface called "Klang" to design a 300x300mm size big layouts.
At the beginning, i was a bit confused about this task, but glad i have a nice group to discuss and share ideas with each others, so i came up with my ideas soon.

At first, i try to do some research about KLANG on the Internet, but there's not much information about it. Luckily, I still found a short paragraph describing KLANG:

"British designer Will Carter designed Klang™ in 1955. A printer with a respected private press in Cambridge, Carter was also a skilled calligrapher. He combined his expertise with press and pen in creating this strong, masculine calligraphic-style sans serif. Klang leans at a slight right angle, giving the impression of movement. Klang is an ideal typeface for casual display typography where the touch of the artist's hand is welcome."

I kept reading this paragraph many times to try to come up with some ideas. Finally i focus on the keywords!
I grab the "keywords" of KLANG from this paragraph, and tried different layouts on my sketch book:

Finally, I made these keywords to become the background:

After sharing this idea to my group, i realized that i forgot an important thing that the biggest and smallest size of words we can use are 48 pt and 14 pt. ^O^"
Looks like I have to try some more ideas based on the rule! ^^

Here are some cool layouts from my group:
