Book Binding

Recently, in order to make illustration book for Airside project, so i started to learn book biding by myself.
I found it so fun to bind book by my own. Its so excited to see each page be bound and look exactly like a book sold at store! :)

Before i did book binding, I thought it maybe difficult to bind books by myself. I kept going to library checked and analysed those books bound by hard cardboard, and found that maybe it wasn't that hard, so I bought some material from stationary and begin my first try.

This is the first book I bound. Actually I made this book cover second time, because the first one, i didn't leave much space between the cardboard, so when i covered my book, the cover became smaller and didn't fit well, so second time, i left enough space between each cardboard, and its succeed! :)

This is the first cover i made. As you can see the right hand side pic, the space between red arrows is not enough, so when folding, the cover become smaller than my book.

Luckily, at the tutorial with Darren, he showed me an illustrion book, the way it binds is exactly what i want to bind my book, so i analysed it a bit, and took some photos.
Red arrow shows the space i shoud leave between each cardboard.

one of my story reminded darren of this illustration book.

this is another book i observed before doing book binding

leaving space is an important point for me when doing book binding.
Red arrow: important GAP!

Book binding for my second stroy book. Succeeded in one time. :)

Airside Project

These are what i've done so far for Airside project.
I Feel so lucky i can work with them and do what i really love to do - illustration and story telling.

Today we got an individual presentation about what we've done so far to Airside people Monika and Chris.
Below was how i presented my storyboard in professional way.

i fallow the book i borrowed from library called "Storyboard Design Course", scanned my storyboard from sketch book, cut and paste all the frame on foamboard, this is how storyboard artists present for their client professionally.

I got quite good feedback from Monika and Chris, they like all my three stories, especially the last one.
also they gave me some wonderful suggestion to develop my story, really feel lucky that i can discuss my works with these professional people.
I'm sure i'll do my best next and keep working on it. :)

Below are what other classmates did I think will be good inspiration for my work next.

this one is really a good illustraion, and i like the way how he present the texture.

nice textture of the background

this style of illustration is my favourite, remain the original handdrawing textture and keep it black and white.

Illustrators I like

Mattias Adolfsson

website: http://www.mattiasadolfsson.se/index.html

Mattias is one of my favorite illustrators, i love his hand drawing, surreal and fine style of illustration. His website of his artwork is also special all by his hand drawing.

Tim Burton

website: http://www.timburton.com/

He is definitely one of the most famous illustrator and director in the world. I love those weird characters he create and also those stories he gave them. No need to introduce, i'm sure that everyone must know the famous movies "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands".

Elena Odriozola

Also another hand drawing illustrator. Love her illustration in one of her books "The Opposite". Just cant leave my eye from those characters she draws.

Shaun Tan

A hand drawing illustrator again. i love those characters and stories he create as well! His "cut and paste" of different hand writing texts in the books is also one of the reason i like this illustrator. Very special! One of my favorite story books is "The Red Tree"
